Entrepreneurship, Science, & Women’s Health

Mission Statement:

Everyday I dedicate my work to advancing women’s health by equipping founders,  investing in innovative ideas, educating other investors, and engaging academia and government agencies to create an ecosystem that fosters better healthcare for women, females, and girls.

How she got here:

Dr. Brittany Barreto is an unconventional serial entrepreneur and investor that proves that anything is possible with hard work & heart. As the first person in her family to attend college, Brittany financially supported herself working as an ophthalmologist medical technician and an independent distributor of Athena’s Home Novelties (i.e. sexual pleasure accessories). She found herself spending Friday and Saturday nights running passion parties across college campuses and educating students on basic anatomy, pleasure, and sexual hygiene and loving every second of it.

During her doctoral education in Molecular and Human Genetics, she launched into the startup scene by founding a venture-backed company, Pheramor. Pheramor was the first nation-wide DNA based dating app. The company closed due to changes in Apple policy around asking for DNA in the app store. But Brittany used this “set back” as a launch pad to enter a new career in venture capital and startup consulting.

She was recruited as Senior Venture Associate for Capital Factory, the most active fund in Texas, tasked with launching the firm’s Gulf Coast branch. She increased the Capital Factory Houston portfolio by 205%.

She now has her sights on advancing women’s health through her non-profit FemTech Focus and venture fund, Coyote Ventures.

What is FemTech?

FemTech is innovation in women’s health and wellness. FemTech solutions address conditions that solely, disproportionately, or differently affect women, females, and girls. For far too long, women have historically and systemically been excluded from research and advancements in healthcare. Technology and medicine have focused on the needs of men, and women have largely been expected to either adapt, or accept their health conditions as “the way it is”. Women’s health tech solutions is an underserved, and yet massively lucrative market that is expected to reach $1 Trillion by 2027 (FemTech Focus).

Working with Dr. Barreto was a true turning point in our startup journey. After working with Brittany, we got accepted into an exclusive accelerator program, received a grant, and were able to negotiate investment terms with confidence. We could not have gotten this far this quickly without her help.
